Licensure for Medical Residents, Dental Residents and Fellows
Staff Care can assist medical residents, dental residents and fellows in obtaining licensure in the states in which you want to work. A great amount of time, documentation and detailed paperwork is required to obtain medical or dental licensure, and some state boards can take more than six months to issue licenses. Resident physicians and resident dentists cannot simply fill out an application, pay a fee, supply copies of certificates and have your license issued. For dental residents and fellows, some states require examination from certain regional boards and testing agencies. Prerequisites for Receiving Your DEA
In order to obtain your DEA, you must already have an active state medical license in the U.S. Because some states require you to obtain a state-level controlled substance registration (CSR) before you can apply for your DEA, you should check the regulations for the state in which you are licensed. Keep in mind that the address listed on your DEA application must be in the same state in which you are licensed. If your state requires a state-level CSR, the address on that application must be the same as the one listed on your DEA application.

Check with your state medical board, dental board or board of pharmacy regarding possible requirements for any state-level controlled substance registration (CSR) for physicians and dentists.
For medical residents, the states that have a CSR requirement are: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.
For dental residents, the states that have a CSR requirement are: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming.
For dental residents, the states that have a Sedation requirement are: Alaska, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

The Importance of Board Certification
As growing numbers of employers, health insurance companies, malpractice insurance companies and patients place a high level of importance on physicians maintaining Board certification in their specialties, attaining and renewing Board certification is critical to your success. It is highly recommended that you obtain Board certification within, at the very most, four to five years of graduation from your residency or fellowship. Don't underestimate the importance of Board certification and potential negative consequences to your career if you neglect it.
For resident dentists, Board certification is not as vital to your success as it is for resident physicians. Rather, Board certification by the American Board of General Dentistry indicates your dedication to attaining the top achievement in general dentistry. While receiving Board certification is not an expectation as it is for physicians, this prestigious status does give dentists the assurance that they are able to provide their patients with the highest level of care available.
