Last week, Susan Salka, President and CEO of AMN Healthcare Services, Staff Care's parent company and the nation's leading healthcare staffing provider, appeared on CNBC to discuss the nation's clinician and physician shortage and its effects on the future of healthcare delivery.
In a conversation with Mad Money's Jim Cramer that explored the many challenges facing the healthcare industry today, Ms. Salka laid particular emphasis on the shortage of physicians, clinicians and nurses — a shortage that's expected to accelerate in the years to come, as more healthcare professionals choose to retire and more Americans join the ranks of the insured.
"The shortage of clinicians spans all disciplines," Ms. Salka told Mr. Cramer. "About a third of physicians are 60 or older, so a good majority of them are going to begin to retire, and we don't have enough new physicians coming into the market.
"It's really been an amazing burst that we've seen in demand," she added. "We're at one of the highest gaps between job openings and job hires within healthcare today. And that means our clients are having challenges in hiring not only temporary but permanent staff. So we come in with a suite of workforce solutions to really help them all across that spectrum."
Susan Salka: Shortage of Physicians & Clinicians 'Spans All Disciplines'
In addition to the ongoing physician shortage, Ms. Salka goes on to describe the "multiple drivers within the business" that are also contributing to a surge in demand for qualified physicians and practitioners.
- The Economy: When "unemployment is low, it typically drives demand for services in our business."
- The Aging Population: An aging population also creates more demand for healthcare services, presenting even more challenges for healthcare organizations to meet that demand.
- The Affordable Care Act (ACA): The millions of new insured Americans granted access to healthcare because of the ACA are also contributing to industry expansion.
- Industry Consolidation: As clients evolve their business, AMN has done the same, to help meet those needs, and to better anticipate just what healthcare services will be needed in the future. (For instance, in a response to a client need for better healthcare leadership, AMN Healthcare has acquired a number of healthcare executive placement firms, as Ms. Salka explains in the video.)
