Nominate Your 2019 Country Doctor
Staff Care, the nation’s leading physician staffing firm and a company of AMN Healthcare, is looking for an outstanding country doctor, the kind who still makes house calls and might accept the occasional apple pie or roast turkey for a fee.
Now in its 26th year, the Country Doctor of the Year Award honors the spirit, skill and dedication of America’s rural medical practitioners.
As part of the award, Staff Care will provide the Country Doctor of the Year with a temporary physician (locum tenens) for two weeks at no charge, a service valued at $10,000. According to Staff Care President Jeff Decker, rural doctors often cannot find physicians to cover their practices and so have difficulty taking vacations.
“We hope the award winner enjoys some well-deserved rest,” Decker said, “but our real intent is to honor an outstanding country doctor and to shine a light on the great work that rural physicians continue to do even as their numbers dwindle.” Past recipients of the award have been featured in numerous national media outlets, including USA Today, People, Parade and The Today Show.
STAFF CARE has hundreds of locum tenens jobs, in rural and metropolitan settings.
How to nominate a rural physician for Country Doctor of the Year
Nominations for the Country Doctor of the Year Award will be accepted for physicians who practice in rural communities and who are engaged in such primary care areas as general practice, family practice, internal medicine and pediatrics. Anyone can nominate a physician, including co-workers, friends, patients or family members, and all stories or anecdotes about the physician’s practice are welcomed.
Nomination forms can be submitted here. The deadline to submit nominations for the award is November 15, 2018.

2017 – Van Breeding, M.D., Letcher County, Kentucky
Dr. Breeding provides seemingly tireless care to Letcher County as well as neighboring Harlan and Hazard Counties -- an area beset with challenges including a severely diminished economy, a higher-than-average poverty rate and an abundance of out-of-work citizens.
This dedicated rural physician loves what he does. “My heart is in these hills and with these people,” he told Staff Care. “My patients are my friends and in many cases my relatives. I can’t imagine living or practicing anywhere else.”

2016 - Jasmine Sulaiman, M.D., Cleveland, Texas
Often scheduled to see patients 40 hours a week while serving as medical director of four clinics and the local hospice — and making house calls —Jasmine Sulaiman, M.D., also worked to implement a program that upgraded medical care at the county jail and spearheaded an effort that saw the Health Center of Southeast Texas designated as a Level 2 Patient-Centered Medical Home.
“Dr. Sulaiman is all that comes between the underserved patients in her area and a healthcare crisis,” said Steven Racciato, executive director of the Health Center of Southeast Texas. “She is absolutely indispensable to the communities she serves.”
