High demand for locum tenens ER physicians

The 2017 Survey of Temporary Physician Staffing Trends, conducted by Staff Care, found that emergency medicine physicians were the fourth-most-requested specialty for locum tenens assignments, after primary care physicians, hospitalists, and behavioral health professionals.

In fact, 17.2 percent of health care employers had used locum tenens, ER physicians, within the past year, which was nearly a 5 percent increase over the prior year, and a significant jump from the company’s first staffing survey in 2012. That first survey found just 9.7 percent of employers reported using locum tenens in their emergency departments.

Due in part to the steep upward trend in emergency room visits—from 90.3 million in 1996 to 136 million visits in 2015, according to the CDC—recruiters expect to see increasing demand for ER locum tenens, for both part-time and full-time positions.
