President of Staff Care and President of Locum Tenens Staffing at AMN Healthcare Sean Ebner was recently consulted for an article in Modern Healthcare regarding the growing use of healthcare managed services among hospitals, medical groups and other healthcare facilities.
"Hospital systems increasingly are recognizing how the MSP model could benefit them," said Ebner, per the article's author, Michael Sandler. "Getting talent at the right time and at the right level is the No. 1 cost for hospitals."
Describing the benefits of the MSP model during a time when "contract labor costs are soaring," the article explores the use of MSP by hospitals and healthcare systems in an effort to outsource not only the time spent finding qualified physicians and healthcare practitioners, but also credentialing and other administrative tasks.
"MSP proponents say this allows hospitals to focus on providing care for patients, rather than scouring staffing firms for potential candidates," Sandler writes. He adds: "To succeed, an MSP firm often must get closely involved in a provider client's operations."
And, as an example of how the MSP model can be successfully applied to temporary physician staffing, Sandler offered the opinion of Aria Health's chair of emergency medicine, Dr. Gerald Wydro, on that organization's work with AMN Healthcare, Staff Care's parent company.
An AMN Healthcare Managed Services Success Story
"About 15 months ago, the three-campus Aria Health system in Philadelphia decided to switch its model of staffing from a contract management group and instead start its own physician management operation," writes Sandler. "During the transition, there was a need to fill vacancies rapidly."
“We needed much more than a few locums doctors,” said Dr. Wydro. “We needed a whole system.” Enter AMN Healthcare's MSP solution, which proceeded "to help Aria with recruitment, credentialing, onboarding and scheduling."
"AMN placed a manager on-site for several months," Sandler writes. "The company also embedded credentialing specialists within Aria's credentialing office" and "created a large pool of physician candidates from which Aria was able to fill open spots."
While using the AMN Healthcare MSP platform, Aria's emergency department patient-satisfaction scores rose ten percentage points — from 76 to 86 percent — within four months, but also dropped another two percentage points after Aria stopped using AMN physicians.
Thanks to the "embedded" nature of MSP services, the physicians provided by AMN "were much more engaged than regular locums tenens physicians," Sandler writes.
"AMN staff members were committed to the health system every step of the way," Dr. Widro noted. “If we would have used five locums companies, we would have failed at this,” he said. “We also would have failed without on-site MSP leadership.”
