Happy National Nurse Practitioner Week 2016 from your friends at Staff Care! As the nation's leading source for locum tenens jobs from coast to coast, we're delighted to have another opportunity to express our enormous gratitude for America's hard-working (and often underappreciated) NPs.
In the words of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), "National Nurse Practitioner Week is held annually to celebrate these exceptional health care providers and to remind lawmakers of the importance of removing outdated barriers to practice so that NPs will be allowed to practice to the full extent of their experience and education."
Regarding that last part, the AANP and other organizations have been lobbying in recent years to expand the scope of practice for NPs. Nurse practitioners have prescriptive privileges in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., yet they hold full practice authority in only 21 states (and D.C.). And among these 21 states, only about a third of them (Colorado, Hawaii, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, and West Virginia) have granted expanded access since 2013, often as a result of the need for more practitioners in the face of the nation's primary care physician shortage.

On top of that, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) earlier this year also officially proposed new medical regulations to “permit full practice authority of all VA advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) when they are acting within the scope of their VA employment,” according to Forbes.
Even short of these expanded privileges, NPs are an essential part of American's healthcare workforce right now. According to the AANP, more than 222,000 NPs are licensed in the United States, and among them:
- 72% accept Medicare
- 78% accept Medicaid
- 81% accept private insurance
- 77% accept uninsured
- 49.9% hold hospital privileges
- 11.3% have long-term care privileges
- 95.8% prescribe medications
