It's that time of year again! National Nurse Practitioner Week 2016 is upon us, and we want to join the chorus of voices showing appreciation for nurse practitioners and everything they do to help make Americans healthy.
And we're not the only ones to appreciate the great roles NPs play in America's healthcare system: Over the past several years, nurse practitioner scope of practice has expanded across the country as more lawmakers, regulators, healthcare administrators and patients come to realize to what extent NPs can provide the kind of high-quality care that's needed more than ever in the face of the nation's ongoing physician shortage. (Read more about the physician shortage here.)
One NP sums up the situation particularly well: "In my clinic and countless other practices, the demand for primary care has skyrocketed," nurse practitioner Deborah C. Varnam wrote earlier this year the pages of North Carolina's News & Observer.
"There is a way to fix the primary care crisis, and nurse practitioners know the prescription," Varnam explained. "NPs have been at the forefront of providing primary health care to patients for over half a century. With more than six years of academic and clinical preparation, we assess patients, order and interpret diagnostic tests, make diagnoses and initiate and manage treatment plans – including prescribing medications.
"We are the health care providers of choice for millions of patients and manage 990 million patient visits per year."
And recent developments back up that statement: According to Politico, Colorado, Hawaii, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, and West Virginia have all passed laws expanding NP scope of practice within the last three years. (And quite a few other states, including Florida, Pennsylvania and Oklahoma, have attempted to do the same.)
The movement to grant full practice authority to NPs seems poised to gain even more ground in the years to come. With that in mind, Staff Care would like to kick off NP Week 2016 with this exclusive nurse practitioner scope of practice infographic, offering a high-level overview of just what NPs can do in terms of scope of practice, and where they can do it.
