In this video, a panel of experienced physicians assembled by Staff Care discuss the pros and cons of locum tenens work, including flexibility, career security, the variety of experiences and practice settings, among others.
"You really only have to go in and do the job," says Dr. Manisha Shah, comparing the convenience of locum tenens work to the obligations of running a private practice. "Running your own office is a lot of responsibility ... but with locums, everything's taken care of for you."
For Dr. Shrimant Ayaram, working brief engagements at a wide variety of facilities means missing opportunities to connect on a deeper level with the hospital team.
"They don't get really to invest in you," he says. "But you don't really have a boss. You're your own boss, really."

Dr. Andrea Lundell has the opposite perspective: "Every place I've gone, I've gotten to know the people that I meet, I have friends for life and family for life."
"The cons are that you have to leave at the end of your assignment! It's sad ... they're your family."
