AMN Healthcare Survey of Physicians: 42% of Doctors are Aged 55+
"According to the American Medical Association’s Physician Master File, 42 percent of practicing physicians in the United States are 55 years old or older. This includes approximately 336,000 of some 800,000 physicians who currently are in active patient care."
So write the staffing experts at AMN Healthcare — the nation's leader and innovator in healthcare workforce solutions and staffing services, and the parent company of Staff Care — in a new survey of physicians aged 55 and older that highlights the growing need for younger physicians to help meet the nation's ongoing shortage.
Based on 2015 data, this survey of physicians reveals a trove of interesting data, including the fact that more than 50 percent of physicians within some medical specialties are 55 years of age or older. (Those specialties include neurology, orthopedic surgery, cardiology, psychiatry, oncology and pulmonology, with almost three out of four doctors in the latter specialty in that age group).
