Staff Care recently completed its 2014 Survey of Temporary Physician Staffing Trends, with full results to be released soon. This annual report, based on data collected from healthcare executives and locum tenens physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants nationwide, also examines trends revealed by temporary physician staffing assignments Staff Care conducted in 2013.
The survey, now in its 11th year, reveals the prevalence of locum tenens physicians in medical facilities and the most in-demand locum tenens specialties.
One of the most striking findings from this year’s survey is the increase in the number of facilities using locum tenens doctors. A whopping 90 percent of healthcare facilities have used temporary physicians to supplement existing staff in the past nine months, up from 74 percent in 2013.
Primary care doctors are the most in-demand locum tenens providers, which is not surprising given the current state of the healthcare market in the wake of the ACA. Emergency medicine is also one of the most requested specialties, also a result of healthcare reform.
“With our nation’s response in making healthcare accessible to all, healthcare systems are ramping up their emergency departments’ staff coverage in response to the increase in demand. Recent studies indicate indicate patients will become more educated in their healthcare coverage and take a more proactive approach in their health overall, leading the higher demand towards primary care providers,” said Brian Squibbs, Staff Care Regional Vice President.
According to the temporary physician staffing survey's findings, the top 10 most requested locum tenens specialties are:
- Primary Care
- Behavioral Health
- Nurse Practitioners
- Internal Medicine Sub-Specialties
