With the national shortage of physicians, nurses and allied health professionals, and with the onset of the Affordable Care Act, which will extend health insurance coverage to millions of people, who is going to take care of America’s aging and growing population?
That's a question that Jim Cramer, host of the highly popular financial/investing program “Mad Money”, recently posed to his national television audience.
Cramer, one of the most experienced and successful stock “handicappers” in the industry, invited Susan Salka, CEO of AMN Healthcare, on a recent edition of his show to address the question.
During the interview, which can be viewed here, Cramer outlined how AMN Healthcare is uniquely positioned to service the needs of the healthcare industry during this time of historic change and transition. He also provided Susan with the time to discuss the strategic initiatives AMN Healthcare has implemented, particularly as a managed services provider (MSP), that now positions the company as the industry innovator in healthcare workforce solutions.
In the interview, Susan refers to current conditions as the “perfect storm” to fuel demand for healthcare professionals. Staff Care, AMN Healthcare’s locum tenens division, anticipates that temporary physician staffing will play a large and crucial role in meeting that demand.
Staff Care’s 2013 Survey of Temporary Physician Staffing Trends reveals that 74 percent of healthcare facilities used temporary physicians to supplement their staff in the past 12 months, with 57 percent using locum tenens to fill in until a permanent doctor is found, reflecting the challenges of recruiting physicians in an era of shortages.
Has your healthcare facility seen an increase in locum tenens healthcare providers, or are you using locums physicians for the first time as the result of provider shortages? We would like to hear your story and get your perspective.
