Considering
your next locum tenens assignment? There are a vast number of locum jobs
available, including many at hospitals and facilities that have been recognized
as the best healthcare employers across the country.
Becker’s
Healthcare recently published their
list of the 150 Top Places to Work in
Healthcare| 2018,
including nearly 100 of the best hospitals, health systems and medical
practices. Additional selections included healthcare service suppliers,
management consulting companies and staffing companies, including Staff
Care/AMN Healthcare.
The best
hospitals, health systems and practices were chosen for promoting diversity,
professional growth and employee engagement. Many of these organizations aim to
ensure the professionals caring for their patients strike a healthy work–life
balance. Their positive workplace cultures not only improve job satisfaction
for permanent and temporary staff, but they enable physicians, nurse
practitioners and other clinicians to perform at their best.

Creating
a positive workplace that engages providers
“Being named as one of Becker’s
Top 150 Places to Work in Healthcare is a big stepping stone on Beaumont
Health’s path to becoming a workplace of choice—but we’re not resting quite
yet,” said Aaron Gillingham, senior vice president and chief human resources
officer for Beaumont Health in Southfield, Michigan.
“As Michigan’s largest health
system and one of its largest employers, we’re focused on the creation of one
employee experience with a strong culture and high level of employee engagement
at the forefront of our efforts,” Gillingham added.
Beaumont
has eight hospitals, nearly 5,000 physicians on staff and more than 38,000 employees.
It strives to promote a positive work environment.
Making a difference in patient
outcomes
Along with
satisfying healthcare providers, a positive work environment can also make a
difference in patient care outcomes.
Linda
H. Aiken, PhD, FAAN, FRCN, at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia,
and colleagues reported on an international study in 2011 that found poor work
environments were associated with negative quality of care. That
same year, Alison M. Trinkoff, ScD, RN, FAAN, at the University of Maryland in
Baltimore, and colleagues reported higher rates of pneumonia deaths and
pulmonary embolisms or deep vein thrombosis in units with poor work
environments.
In
Florida, more than 3,000 physicians practice at Orlando Health and 23,000
people work at the top health system with nine hospitals and the area’s only
Level One trauma center.
“Orlando Health provides a
positive and nurturing environment for team members in a mission-driven
atmosphere,” said Desmond Jordan, media relations manager at
Orlando Health. “The organization promotes a culture of caring, compassion and
excellence, and team members take great pride in the organization’s close to
100-year history and its contributions in the community.”
In
2017, The Advisory Board recognized Orlando Health with the Workplace of the
Year award, and The Leapfrog Group recently
awarded straight A Hospital Safety Grades to
all six of Orlando Health’s adult, acute-care facilities.
Another award-winning best place
to work in healthcare in Florida, BayCare Health System in Clearwater, connects
individuals and families to a wide range of services at 15 hospitals and
hundreds of other convenient locations throughout the Tampa Bay and central
Florida regions. Its mission is to improve the health of all people served through
community-owned, healthcare services that set the standard for high-quality,
compassionate care.
“BayCare’s top priority is
delivering clinical excellence for our communities, and we can only do that
when team members and physicians work together as one extraordinary team,” said
Tommy Inzina, president and CEO of BayCare.
In addition to being chosen as a
top health system on Becker’s Top Places to Work in Healthcare list, BayCare was
named one of the best companies to work for in the country by Fortune earlier this year.
Encouraging shared commitment
and compassionate care
Several
specialty hospitals were named among the best places to work in healthcare
including the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), in New York. Founded in 1863,
the hospital has become a leader in the field of musculoskeletal care. Surgeons perform more than
30,000 procedures annually at HHS. It operates a library open to employees and
patients.
“Each and every member of the HSS family strives to deliver
compassionate care to everyone who walks through our doors, whether they are
caring for patients on the front lines or supporting from behind the scenes,”
said Bruce Slawitsky, senior vice president of human resources and service excellence
at HSS.
“We have worked hard to develop a culture at HSS based on our shared
commitment to our values of excellence, passion, integrity, creativity and
teamwork,” he continued. “These values and the culture they help produce are
the not-so-secret ingredients of our success.”
