Should primary care physicians be compensated differently than specialists? The topic of physician compensation is often a sensitive one, yet it remains central to many conversations about today's healthcare industry, especially as it concerns working physicians.
It's also a topic of particular interest to locum tenens doctors. In this exclusive video, Staff Care's panel of locum physicians draws on many years of locum tenens experience to weigh in on the discrepancies between specialist and primary care physician pay.
"Experts in fields should be paid more," says one doctor. "But I do think in some areas there is a huge gap, and that maybe there shouldn't be such a great gap in the difference in pay."
Another panelist ventures the idea the differences between specialist and primary care physician compensation "may be based on the liability that's involved," noting that "if a radiologist, cardiologist, pulmonologist has to interpret a test, the liability based on that interpretation is significant.
