Healthcare reform is a topic that isn't going away: With every political cycle, debate renews on what is and isn't likely to change regarding physician employment and staffing.
With that in mind, Staff Care's Phil Miller shares some insight on the subject. And given Mr. Miller's decades of experience as a leader in the physician employment space, there are few voices more qualified to speak on the subject.
"The days of the traditional private practice doctor are gone," Miller explains in this exclusive video. "You have doctors practicing in all different types of styles today, from employed doctors to part-time doctors, to concierge physicians ... and increasingly, more locum tenens doctors."
Speaking to the changing nature of physician work practices, and how that affects healthcare employers — and their long-tern staffing plans — Miller goes on to discuss how "practice conditions in healthcare today" lead doctors to seek "some sort of relief from onerous government regulations, insurance regulations etc., and they're embracing different practice styles."
The upshot of this? Now more than ever, physicians are embracing locum tenens. "So we see the number of physicians who are practicing locums growing, and being an increasing component of the overall physician workforce," Miller says.
"So, you have to have variety in your staffing today, you have to incorporate different types of practice styles, you have to accommodate doctors who have different perspectives and ways of practicing, and that includes locum tenens. Increasingly, we find that it's a more important piece of the staffing puzzle."
